Hockey Fights Cancer 2025
On Saturday, November 15th, the Hawks joined the fight against cancer.
Our teams proudly taped up their sticks with purple tape and put Hockey Fights Cancer stickers on their helmets. Our coaches all wore their Hawks Hockey Fights Cancer hoodies that were given to them from a very generous donation.
Throughout the day at our home games at the Skatium, we asked survivors and thrivers to join their teams on the bench to be honorary captains during warm-up. Our HAWK-ey family and friends purchased raffle tickets for a chance to win a signed hockey stick by NHL player Matt Roy #3 of the Washington Capitals whose father has beat cancer twice. Congratulations to Kelly Anne Kubiak for winning! They also purchased "I skate for" signs and we made our Wall of Hope on the rink boards.
During our 15AA game, the team had a special captain leading them onto the ice - fellow Hawk player and cancer survivor Connor Gravelle #18. Along with his big brother Danielle, he helped get the team hyped for their game, evening winning a ceremonial puck drop. Connor has been cancer free since 2018.
At 1 pm, there were almost 60 players and coaches who joined us on the ice for the Hawks very own skills competition. Lead by Coach Carter Young along with coaches, Chris Wharton, Steve Serpe, Dave Acchione, John Cerniglia, Matt Miller, Meredith Braverman and Joe Manzo. They competed for fastest skater, most number of goal shots, and fastest time through an obstacle course. And to finish it off, our goalies competed to see who could shoot the puck and make the elusive shot - the goalie goal.
And we kept everyone fed from another generous donation of snacks and coffee from Wawa.
By the end of the day, the Hawks raised over $3300 to help fight cancer.
We are so thankful to our HAWK-ey family and friends. Thank you!
